Piranha EXT Pro G3 Paintball Gun Review
Overview The Piranha EXT Pro G3 is one of Piranhas most innovative paintball guns. The defining feature of the EXT Pro is the all new Prizm barrel equipped on it. The EXT Pro also comes with many other great features, but the Prizm barrel is only available on the EXT Pro. Not only does the EXT Pro look great, but it also performed very well in our testing. A well illustrated owners manual, 3 allen wrenches, a barrel plug, a few extra o-rings, and a one year warranty from Piranha are included with the gun.
In the Box

First Glance:
The EXT Pro looks awesome. You will not find another paintball gun with a clear barrel, and that makes the EXT Pro an eye catcher. Out on the field it seemed like just about everyone wanted to see a couple shots taken through the Prizm barrel. The EXT Pro is available in 2 color schemes. Our personal favorite is the blue scheme, but for the player that demands a darker, better camouflaged gun the option of a black finish is available. The EXT Pro also has a well finished chrome plating on the sight rail, barrel cage, and Ram Air chamber. Other features like the Pure Energy regulator, double trigger, and drop forward add to the guns tournament level appearance. The EXT Pro looks great on the field, and we would have to give it an 8 or 9 out of ten for appearance.

Features:
FeaturesFeatures? You bet this gun has some great features. The EXT Pro retails around $245 and comes with all the great features we have come to expect from a gun in the $200 price range. Lets just try to list all the features first: Prizm barrel, Pure Energy regulator with micro guage, Ram Air chamber, raised site rail, venturi bolt, flush cocking system (no external moving parts), rear velocity adjuster, drop forward, vertical feed, double trigger, and finally a one year warranty from PMI. Thet is a nice list of features for an experienced player to use. We really like the performance of the EXT Pro and its easy to see why with all the features. Feature: Prizm Barrel:
Prizm BarrelThe Prizm barrel is a new and unique barrel designed from a highly durable plastic specifically for paintball guns. The Prizm barrel has rifled porting as well as a muzzle break at its end. Dont expect to be able to see the paintball leaving the barrel since paintballs move too fast for the human eye, but it is interesting to watch the CO2 gas as it disperses in the barrel between shots. Although the Prizm barrel does look really great, dont expect it to give you great accuracy. The barrel performs the same as any other barrel. Accuracy is mainly determined by the paintball to barrel size match. We used PMI Premium paintballs in the Prizm and found that they fit well in it. The Prizm barrel is a really cool new idea from PMI and we hope to see more like it on other guns in the future. Feature: Pure Energy Regulator
Pure Energy RegulatorThe EXT Pro comes equipped with the Pure Energy regulator from PMI. A regulator serves two useful purposes. 1.) It maintains a constant operating pressure in the gun. 2.) It acts similar to an expansion chamber by keeping liquid CO2 from entering the internals of a gun. A regulator is the next step up from an expansion chamber. Having a good regulator like the PMI Pure Energy helps to keep the velocity between shots constant... which in turn increased a guns accuracy. The Pure Energy regulator that comes on the EXT Pro is very well made and is an excellent feature on the gun. Feature: Ram Air Chamber:
Ram Air The Ram Air chamber is a radical, new design recently introduced to the paintball market by PMI. The concept behind the Ram Air low pressure chamber is based on the action of an internal spring which forces CO2 out of the low pressure chamber and back into the valve, allowing the paintball gun to operate at a lower pressure. Lowering the operating pressure of a paintball gun allows the balls to get a longer push out of the barrel as opposed to a single, short pop of air. The Ram Air chamber helped to lower the output pressure of the gun, making ball breaks less likely. We shot about 800 paintballs through the EXT Pro and did not have a single ball break occur. Field Testing Velocity Consistency
We mounted the EXT Pro on our test bench and chronoed in the gun at about 285 feet per second. We ran this test at a temperature of 75 degrees on a sunny day with minimal wind using a 16 oz. CO2 tank. The graph below shows the velocity for each shot taken in each of the two ten shot series we recorded. The second series was fired 10 minutes after we completed the first series of shots.

Velocity ChartThe EXT Pro did very well in our velocity consistency testing. Most shots stayed within 3 - 4 feet per second of the previous shot. The addition of the Pure Energy regulator on the EXT Pro was a major factor in the velocity consistency. We had the regulator adjusted to 600 psi input pressure and it held the pressure consistently throughout our test. What does all the velocity consistency translate into? It translates into tighter and more consistent shot groupings, thus giving the EXT Pro better accuracy. Field Stripping & Maintenance
PartsThe EXT Pro strips down like most every Piranha. It is very easy to remove the bolt and clean. The entire bolt and striker assembly can be removed in about 5 seconds via the removal of the small field strip pin that is easily pushed out using your finger. PMI has a very good owners manual that does an excellent job of walking you through the steps of cleaning and maintaining the EXT Pro. The manual also includes how to take apart, maintain, and adjust the Pure Energy regulator includes with the gun. Reinserting the bolt and striker on the EXT Pro is easier then it is on any Spyder guns since the EXT Pro has a sear release slide. The sear release allows the striker to smoothly slide over the trigger. The Piranhas bolt and striker can be quickly disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled in about 5 minutes. Maintaining the EXT Pro is a breeze and usually only requires a few drops of oil after every game.
Bolt / Striker Assembly Balance and Field Performance
After all of our rigorous testing, disassembling, and reassembling it finally came time to do what we wait all week for...... play paintball! We packed up the EXT Pro and headed out to the field to run a real life test on it during a few games.

On the field we noted that the EXT Pro felt very lightweight and it was very quick and easy to maneuver. The drop forward helped to keep the gun nice and compact, making it quick and easy to snap shoot around bunkers and trees. The trigger pull was light and allowed us to fire at a rate of about 7 balls per second. The trigger did seem to have about 1/8th inch of slack in it, but still operated smoothly. The EXT Pros action is smooth and easy to keep the gun on target without excessive correction.

Overall, the EXT Pro felt great out on the field. Quick to maneuver, lightweight, accurate, fast..... couldnt ask for much more from a gun. We really enjoyed testing the EXT Pro.
Conclusion The truth and nothing but the truth:
ApprovedThe Piranha EXT Pro G3 lives up to its tournament level reputation. It has a great list of features, including the one and only prizm barrel. We really enjoyed getting our hands on the EXT Pro G3 and feel that its a great buy for the experienced paintball player who doesnt want to jump into the world of the Autocockers and Automags just yet. The EXT Pro G3 made a great performance and passed all of our testing. It has a lot going for it in most every department. Our only drawback was that the trigger could have been a hair faster, but in reality most of us cant shoot at 10 balls per second anyway. Quick to maneuver, lightweight, accurate, fast, easy to maintain.... those are the keys to a good paintball gun. We seriously recommend the EXT Pro G3 to any player looking for a competitive, tournament level gun that looks great and is a lot of fun to shoot!
